If you're avoiding air travel after MH17 and more, let statistics be your guide | James Ball

Suddenly fear flying? There are so many better things to be scared of. Photograph: Stephen Strathdee/Getty Images

Is it really so irrational to avoid air travel in the wake of the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine, and the TransAsia crash off the coast of Taiwan, and now the Algerian airliner in Northern Africa?

Yes. Completely, totally and entirely irrational. You are probably not going to die in an airplane crash.

It's a widespread fear after planes go down, even though the truth is that air travel is almost always boringly safe and uneventful (whether we concentrate on major US airlines or other carriers around the world). The latest global airline safety report shows there were 90 commercial airplane accidents in 2013. Only nine involved fatalities

The Brazilian midfielder Fred has arrived back in Ukraine for training with Shakhtar Donetsk, having initially refused to travel in the wake of the MH17 disaster.

Fred was one of six South Americans who refused to return to the club after the Malaysian Airlines plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

His fellow Brazilians Ismaily, Douglas Costa, Alex Teixeira and Dentinho, and the Argentinian striker Facundo Ferreyra, also refused to travel from France following a friendly against Lyon.

The club, which announced on Wednesday it would move its headquarters to Kiev and play Champions League and domestic games in the western city of Lviv, said in a statement:

More journalists detained in Ukraine while reporting on MH17 tragedy

Email

Further to my posting yesterday about the pressures placed on journalists in Ukraine, there have been more abductions. Both sides in the conflict were responsible for detaining reporters.

CNN reports that a Ukrainian journalist working as a fixer for the broadcaster, Anton Skiba, is being held by pro-Russian separatists.

Armed men from the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic seized Skiba outside a hotel in Donetsk on Tuesday (21 July). He had been working for one day with a CNN crew reporting on the MH17 crash site.

The broadcaster withheld the news for two days in the hope of securing Skiba's release without publicity. The separatists initially accused Skiba of posting cash rewards for the killing of separatist fighters on his Facebook page.

This accusation was subsequently dropped. Instead, Skiba was accused of using multiple forms of identification with different surnames and being a Ukrainian agent.

The US ambassador to Ukraine, Geoffrey Pyatt, told CNN's Christiane Amanpour that Russia was to blame for such actions by using "fear as part of its strategy to sow chaos in Ukraine."

On the same day, a British freelance reporter working for Russia Today, Graham Phillips, was seized along with a cameraman for the Abkhazian news agency (ANNA), Vadim Aksyonov.

Two other unidentified people were reported to have been detained with them - an employee of the press service of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic and a possible acquaintance of Phillips.

Their captors are thought to have been members of the Ukrainian army. Aksyonov, who was released after two days, was reportedly tortured.

United States House of representatives against sending troops to Iraq

WASHINGTON, 25 Jul-RIA Novosti. United States House of representatives adopted on Friday a resolution that prohibits President Barack Obama to send troops to Iraq for a "protracted war" without congressional authorization.

Obama previously has sent several hundred military advisers in Iraq, where extremists from the group the "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" captured significant territory and a number of major cities. The United States says that is not going to send troops to the Iraqi Government for help.

Resolution of the House of representatives adopted by 370 votes to 40, could have only symbolic meaning, as the President of the United States in the past kept the right to unilateral decisions about the "limited" military operations abroad. While Obama has repeatedly changed his opinion on the matter. So, in preparation for the strike on Syria in the fall of 2013, the President of the United States at first intended to take the decision alone, then applied for permission in Congress, and then abandoned the operation without waiting for a possible rejection of the Congress.

Between the Administration and the House of representatives to continue the confrontation on a range of legal issues relating to the powers of the President. So, the Republicans who control the House of representatives, as early as next week to hold a vote on the President of United States on trial for abuse of power. This step, as the resolution on sending troops to Iraq, would have no practical value because it will block the Senate President Obama's Party in control of the Democratic Party.

An Alabama man who went in to a hospital last month for a circumcision awoke after surgery to find his penis had been amputated, his lawyer said on Thursday.

Johnny Lee Banks Jr., 56, said in a lawsuit filed in state court earlier this week that no one at the Princeton Baptist Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama, had told him why it had been necessary to remove his penis, according to his attorney, John Graves.

"My client is devastated," Graves said.

Banks, who is married and does not work due to a disability, did not recall the precise date of the incident but believed it occurred in June, his attorney said.

The lawsuit does not specify a monetary value of the damages, Graves said.

Named as defendants in the lawsuit are the hospital, the Simon-Williamson Clinic, Urology Centers of Alabama and two doctors, Graves said.

Spokeswomen for the hospital, the clinic and Urology Centers of Alabama did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

A Florida man called 911 to report a man with a gun was about to murder him in order to get out of a traffic ticket and it almost worked, police say.

Just after Julius Lupowitz, 53, had been stopped by an officer on June 24 for speeding, two 911 calls were made where a man was asking for help because another man had a gun and "there was going to be a murder," West Melbourne Police said in a release Thursday.

After the man hung up, dispatchers traced the phone number and alerted officers Lupowitz owned the phone. Officer Ted Salem, who had pulled Lupowitz over in the traffic stop, explained Lupowitz was not in any danger beyond getting a $210 ticket for speeding.

Lupowitz faces a third-degree felony charge for misusing the 911 system. If guilty, he could be sentenced to five years in prison. He was also cited for speeding.

West Melbourne is 100 km southeast of Orlando.

PORTLAND, Ore. - Police in a Portland suburb have a sticky situation on their hands: for more than a month, mysterious vandals have been smearing pastries on cars, depositing doughnuts in lawns and leaving cakes strewn about the streets.

According to Hillsboro police, the baked-goods bandits first struck on June 1, smearing a maple bar across a car windshield.

In the weeks since, the pastry perpetrators have occasionally turned to healthier fare, leaving yogurt, bread and potato salad on vehicles and in driveways, although most of the incidents have involved sweets, said police spokesman Lieutenant Mike Rouches.

Amateur sleuths within the neighborhood collected frosting and sprinkles, and traced pastries back to at least two supermarkets in the area.

SARNIA -- The city is taking a pair of homeowners to court over allegations that their collection of farm animals is causing headaches for neighbours and drivers in their neighbourhood.

At least 12 different types of animals are being housed illegally on a property, the city's chief building official Alan Shaw confirmed Tuesday. Some of the barnyard bounty includes draft horses, donkeys, chickens, pigs and geese.

Shaw said the land isn't currently zoned correctly for agricultural use, so the homeowners have to go through the city's variance process -- applying for a zoning exemption -- in order to bring animals on site.

"This has sort of steamrolled into them bringing in more and more animals," Shaw said. "It's one of those things that if they got a variance, they would have to declare how many animals, what type of animals, where they were going to house them and that kind of thing."

Neighbour Jim Green says his quiet country life has been turned upside down by the livestock collection.

Green claims he's woken up around 3 a.m. every day by his neighbour's roosters. He actually keeps a tape recorder by his window to tape the crowing.

If Sarnia's provincial offences court rules the animals can be removed, Shaw said the Sarnia & District Humane Society would be involved to help rehome the livestock.

OTTAWA -- Worst. Date. Ever.

A woman had her doubts about the man she picked up in a bar in her hometown of Drummondville, just east of Montreal, a few days ago, but probably never dreamed it would go so wrong.

Police figure the pair hooked up and sometime afterward he suggested they scoot off for a romantic junket to his cottage in Outaouais, near Ottawa.

Initially, she was hesitant, but when he suggested she bring along her son and a friend, she decided to take him up on the offer.

Perhaps the first sign things were not going to go well happened Sunday afternoon when the man made them all stop in the municipality of La Peche so he could visit his dad's grave.

After the visit, the man sped along Hwy. 366 towards their destination and pulled out to pass a vehicle on a double line and was spotted by an oncoming MRC cruiser. The cop followed the vehicle, which didn't stop but continued down a rural side road.

The man got out of the vehicle and fled into the woods, leaving the 41-year-old woman, her 15-year-old son and his 15-year-old buddy in the car -- alone and baffled as to what was going on.

"They were quite puzzled," said Const. Martin Fournel. "She'd only known him for about 48 hours."

After a little checking, police informed the trio that the vehicle they were in had been reported stolen in Quebec City nine days earlier from the man's ex-girlfriend's house.

He was eventually captured, thanks in part to the bees he'd stirred up while hiding in the woods.

Martin Letang, 40, was found four hours later walking on Hwy. 366 suffering from the swelling of several bee stings.

He was arrested and faces charges of possession of stolen goods, breach of probation, fleeing police and dangerous driving.
